Taking lessons from nature, Mark Gough is a strong believer in the power of systems. As Executive Director of Natural Capital Coalition since 2015, he has brought together a community of global stakeholders to study and standardize methods for natural capital accounting. Through this role he led the production of the Natural Capital Protocol, a standardized global framework on including natural capital into decision making – previously, when natural capital had been included, its value lacked consistency, was open to personal interpretation, and was dependent on moral arguments. Mark’s work provides a reference for actors around the world and, in becoming the Chief Executive Officer of the overarching Capitals Coalition as well, he continues to establish connections with natural capital. Mark’s vision comes from years of experience in valuation and sustainable integration. Prior to joining the Natural Capital Coalition, he worked on developing value measurement approaches for The Crown Estate and was the Global Environmental Manager for the information company Reed Elsevier. Further, he has driven action on several boards including the TEEB Advisory board, the Steering Committee of the United Nations CEO Water Mandate, the Board of the Alliance for Water Stewardship, and the Aldersgate Group.
